Range Hoods in Edmonton

Kitchen Ventilation

Love to cook? You will need a fan. A hood fan can make a strong statement in your kitchen. The kitchen for many is a like a workshop where we whip up mouthwatering meals to for ourselves and our loved ones. But the wonderful world of cooking has some unfortunate by-products: grease, moisture and odor. Proper ventilation can help minimize the effects of these by products. We sell a variety of hood fans by AGA, Bluestar, Bosch, Faber and Miele.

Hood Fan / Range Hood Functionality

Choosing a hood fan and the type of ventilation will be one of the main decisions you will make in your home. It is important to consider both the design and the function of the hood fan. Be sure to investigate the technical considerations when purchasing a hood fan / range hood.

The first thing to consider is how much power you require with your hood fan / range hood. This is referred to as CFM (Cubic Feet Per Minute). The higher the CFM, the more air the hood fan can remove. The CFM you require will depend on the size and type of range or cook top you have chosen as well as your style of cooking. A large gas range with 6 burners will require more CFM than a 30” electric cooktop. A gas range or cook top requires 600 to 1200 cfm. An electric range or cooktop requires 300 to 450 cfm.

Things to Consider When Putting a New Hood Fan in Your Kitchen

It is important to ensure that your home can handle the volume of air being drawn out of your home by the fan. Be sure to check out your local building codes. Your municipality may insist on installing a make-up air device which helps to replace the air that is expelled from your home by the fan. This is especially important if you are renovating. Most new home builds already include an air make-up system.

If you are unable to vent the hood fan / range hood outside then a model with a recirculating kit is an option. The recirculating kit uses a carbon filter that traps grease and cooking odors so that the air reintroduced to the home is clean and odor fee. Regularly replacing these filters is a must with this unit.

Sound is often a concern with a hood fan. When you buy a high quality hood fan keep in mind it is not the motor you are hearing, it is the blower in the unit. In most cases hood fans have variable speeds. In most instances you will run the fan on the lowest speed. If you have an excessive amount of smoke and grease, then change the setting to the highest to clear the air quickly. Most fans have three to six speed settings. We suggest turning your hood fan on the lowest setting a few minutes before you start cooking so that the air is already moving out of the kitchen.

Proper Sizing for Your New Home or Renovation

A hood fan is typically mounted 30 to 36 inches from the countertop. Some under cabinet models may be installed at a lower height. Remember that your kitchen needs to suit your needs. Consider how far the fan protrudes from the wall and consider your height. You want to be sure that you are not bumping the hood fan or that it is staring you right in the face. Keep in mind the higher a hood fan is installed, the less effective it will be.

It is important to consider the footprint of your range or cooktop and the area that the hood fan will capture. Normally you will want to match the width of the fan with the width of the range or cooktop. The fan should cover the back burners and at least half of the front burners. However, the best practice is to have the fan cover the entire are front to back, and extend 3” past each side.

Hood Fan Care, Maintenance & Warranty Information

Filters are important on a hood fan as they catch much of the grease and cooking by-product being release in to the air in your kitchen. Most filters are easily accessible and can be washed in the dishwasher. Hood fans do collect dust as well. Be sure to wipe down stainless steel regularly with hot water and a microfiber cloth.
